[UPDATED] ISP’s in India blocking torrent and other websites in India after Delhi High Court Ordered

472 websites, including Google Docs, Google Video and Google’s URL shortener goo.gl, have been blocked in India, as per order from the Delhi High Court ,by Justice V. Kameswar Rao of the Delhi High Court, after a complaint by the Sony owned media company which is broadcasting the FIFA World Cup live in India on its Sony Six channels.

However some users through BSNL are able to work around this block by changing the DNS address to OpenDNS or GoogleDNS

Blocking access to Google Docs is bonkers. It seems like the list of websites that were to be blocked was overlooked. It’s rather surprising that the ISPs have blocked Google Docs instead of Google Drive. As the latter, not the former could be used to store video files. Perhaps the old fellows are not aware that Google merged the Docs and its cloud service, and re-branded the whole as Google Drive a few months ago.

A few points sites that blocked:

1. Google Docs and Google Video: docs.google.com and googlevideo.com
2. URL shorteners: goo.gl and adf.ly.
3. File sharing sites: Multiupload.nl, uppit.com, crocko.com (earlier known as easyshare), solidfiles.com, bayfiles.net, tusfiles, bitshare.com, rapidshare.com, sendspace.com, mightyupload.com, uploaded.net, freakshare.com
4. Upload website: aggregator embedupload.com, ul.to,
5. File storage sites: Mega.co.nz, putlocker.com, filemonkey.in, uploadsat.com,
6. Telugu content download sites: telugump3.biz, telugustar.net, telugumasthi.wapka.me, telugustar.net, myteluguwap.net, teluguworld.asia
7. Services for emailing large fies: anysend.com
9. Hindi content site: foncity.in, 3gparena.in, among others.
10. Torrent sites: Including thepiratebay.org, thepiratebay.se, torrentz.is, torrentfunk.com, torrents.net, limetorrents.com, torrenthound.com

Update 1 :

Delhi High Court has given a order for blocking of over 450 sites based on the case filed by Multi Screen Media (Sony TV) in regards to illegal file hosting of videos and clips related to World Cup Football matches for which MSM have sole rights. Check out the actual court order here.

It is interesting to note that court order contains instructions to ISP for blocking sites like Docs.google.com, Google url shortner and 472 such sites. We checked quite a few sites that have been listed and while some are still accessible, some of them have already been blocked.

In our view this is absolutely ridiculous that Court can give such blanket instructions to block these sites. We fail to understand that how can anyone give order to block sites like Google Docs, which is legitimately used by millions for their daily work. While Google docs is still accessible, there are so many legitimate sites that are getting blocked due to this reason.

In all probability, we hope that unblock orders should come soon enough…

Update 2:

According to Medianama, who have got updated court order, the list has been culled from initial 472 sites to 219. The Google websites have been removed from the list but still there are number of torrent and file hosting sites still in the list.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will launch its annual pre-examination helpline from Friday.1 Feb 2013

February 1, 2013 Leave a comment

Untitled

To help students of Classes 10 and 12 beat board exam stress, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will launch its annual pre-examination helpline from Friday.

The countrywide toll free helpline will provide psychological counselling over the telephone to parents and students suffering from severe stress because of the upcoming board exams.

A network of 56 principals, trained counsellors from CBSE-affiliated government and private schools and a few psychologists will man the helpline.

“Whatever anxiety is expressed by the student or parent will be addressed. Though it is primarily a helpline to deal with psychological stress, academic queries, if received, will also be answered or routed to the experts,” said Rama Sharma, spokesperson, CBSE.

Currently in its 15th year, the helpline had received around 5,000 calls last year.

Students can access the helpline by dialing 1800 11 8004 from February 1 to April 17. They can also pose queries to the chairman of the CBSE by logging on to the board’s website, www.cbse.nic.in, or get tips to deal with stress under the helpline icon.

Online counselling is also available by contacting director (academic, research, training and innovation) on sadhanap.cbse@nic.in or the controller of examinations on mcsharma2007@rediffmail.com.

Another pre-exam helpline called Disha, by NGO Snehi, will also be launched on Friday to help students cope with exam distress.

Through the helpline, available from February 1 to March 2 on 011-65978181 between 10 am and 7 pm, a group of trained counsellors and mental-health professionals will help students combat issues such as exam-related tension, lack of concentration, loss of appetite, permanent headache, restlessness, lack of confidence and negative thoughts.

Queries can also be sent to examhelpline@gmail.com. Last year, the helpline had received 1,497 calls.

Leadership Lessons from the Mahatma Gandhi

October 2, 2012 Leave a comment

“Great endings have always had humble beginnings”.Even after decades of Indian independence, the Gandhian philosophy still applies to modern life. His struggle for India’s freedom movement started small, to achieve the “cult” status of the bygone era. Gandhi’s legendary leadership qualities have withstood the ravages of time to hold good even in today’s technology-driven world.

Leadership skills in the modern scenario go beyond the belief of “creating a following”.  With the public being well-informed, leadership is about creating a personal brand, which will not just inspire but establish a life-long connection with the brand’s identity.
Gandhi’s core leadership principles centre on competencies, which will help thrive, sustain and establish the LEADER in all spheres of live. They are:
• Continuous learning and improvement: One of the leading qualities of Mahatma Gandhi was that he kept an open-mind to the thoughts and ideas of his followers. On many instances whenever he was found to contradict himself, to the extent of questioning his sanity, he would plainly tell his followers, “Accept the second and ignore the first one”, indicating his open desire to improve and learn.
• The “other” is not a “label” but just another human being: All were alike to Gandhi from the prince to a pauper; the common man to the political leader. This helped him to keep an open mind and give undivided attention to what the other person was saying without any preconceived notions arising from the person’s background.
• Excellent listener: As a remarkable trait of leadership, Gandhi possessed this quality, which helped to listen to the unsaid and the articulated as well. He was always seen to be “seeing with his ears”
• Proactive in identifying resistance and moving towards Sustainable change: During the 1920s, when Gandhi was questioned about the greatest problems faced by India, he answered “callousness of intellectuals”; much in contrast to the anticipated answer- “slavery and British rule or pervasive poverty”. Gandhi’s long-term vision was towards building a sustainable society, where the helmsman or the knowledge-wielding, were made to be responsible for all their actions.
• The end does not justify the means: Whatever the goal may be, the path towards achieving it should be pure, conscience-driven. As a stringent conscience-keeper himself he advocated a path, which would be as much a matter of pride as the goal itself.
• Self-awareness and discipline: According to Gandhi, the more one delves into one’s inner self, the better it helps to identify the true spirit within – the strengths and weaknesses, creating the necessary space to make conscious, life-changing decisions. Discipline in all walks of life, was one of the primary teachings of Gandhi and he practiced it to improve efficiency and enhance life-management skills.
• Value-driven vision and execution efficiency: It is one thing to dream big and an altogether different aspect to be able to realize the dream. Gandhi had a vision of a free India and he took it step by step to make his dream and the dream of Indians come true. He brought his philosophy down to realistic approach to create a mass-following, which would see eye-to-eye with his Vision of free India.
• The holistic approach for every endeavor: What sets apart a leader from the rest is the approach and the attitude. A holistic approach helps to look beyond the ordinary and takes into consideration all factors underlying a problem.  During the freedom struggle, the non-cooperation movement, the Sathya-Graha or the practice of Ahimsa, gave Gandhi and the India’s freedom struggle sustainable strength to fight till the goal was reached.
